Physical Education
PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Physical Education 1 and Health are required courses and meet the graduation requirement. Physical Education 1 and Health are also prerequisites for all other courses.
911 Physical Education 1 - Grade 9, 10 (0.5 credit)
This semester course will focus on total physical fitness, which includes muscular strength and endurance, cardio-vascular endurance, and flexibility. Student progress will be measured through the President Fitness Program with pre- and post-testing.
912 Health – Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This semester course will focus on the importance of individual and family health. The units will include mental and social health, human development, nutrition and fitness, substance abuse, disease prevention, safety and first aid.
913 Beginning Strength Training - Grades 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course is designed to accommodate all students to help develop power, strength and overall physical conditioning.
914 Advanced Strength Training - Grades 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course is built upon the knowledge and skills learned in Beginning Strength Training. Students will individualize their strength training program to best fit their needs through research. The resulting student programs will be formally presented to the class. Prerequisite: Beginning Strength Training
954 Team Sports - Grades 10, 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course includes activities in team sports and individual sports. Teamwork, group spirit, and respect for individual differences are emphasized. Activities include softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, basketball, and hockey.
956 Life Time Sports Class - Grades 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This class focuses on activities students can participate in throughout their lives: Bowling, golf, power walking with orienteering, recreational games, swimming, and tennis. Students will submit an application to the P.E./Health Department and Academic Dean for approval.
955 Aerobic Fitness - Grades 10, 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This class includes aerobic exercises designed to improve cardio-respiratory endurance. This course will include a class creation of an aerobic routine, as a group activity.
958 Officiating Team Sports – Grades 10, 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This semester course will prepare students to obtain certification for officiating various sports. Students will have the opportunity to become certified officials in basketball, baseball/softball, football, soccer, and volleyball. Students will learn the mechanics of officiating and the rules of each sport. Students will learn the potential to officiate throughout their academic career and on into their adult lives.
