BUSINESS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

733 Introduction to Business - Grades 9, 10 (0.5 credit)
This course provides an introduction to the world of business and helps prepare the student for the economic roles of consumer, worker, and citizen. Students develop an understanding and appreciation of American business. SCCC

735 Accounting 1 - Grades 11, 12 (1 credit)
This is a comprehensive one year course which presents the basic principles of the accounting cycle for both a service business and a merchandising business. It includes an introduction to automated accounting, income and payroll taxes, and the use of special journals.

736 Bookkeeping - Grades 10, 11, 12 (1 credit)
This course is designed to give students an introductory look at personal and business financial record keeping. Units covered include personal banking and budgeting, credit use, fundamental business transactions, and use of business documents.

739 Personal Financial Management – Grade 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course prepares students to handle their personal finances after high school including: banking, credit, insurance, investing, saving and budgeting, and employment. This course is a state requirement and is required for graduation.

741 Business Principles and Management - Grades 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course provides students with a clear understanding of the characteristics, organization, and operation of a business. It is aimed at giving students a sound foundation of knowledge about our free enterprise system. This course is useful for those students who may wish to start their own business someday, or those who are exploring the possibility of a career in business. SCCC

743 Business Law - Grades 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course is designed to help the student better understand the legal world in which we live. Students are better equipped to recognize legal problems and to utilize professional counsel. Topics include: our legal system, contract law, law of torts, criminal law, insurance, consumer law and employment law.

747 *Honors Accounting 2 - Grade 12 (1.0 weight) (1.0 credit)
This course is designed for students who have one or more of the following objectives: to become accounting clerks or assistants; to continue their education in accounting or other business administration area; to broaden and improve knowledge about business procedures and use of accounting records. Students will learn to use an automated accounting program and apply EXCEL spreadsheet to accounting applications. Students will operate the school bookstore. Prerequisite: C or better in Accounting 1 and teacher approval. This course is available for college credit through Missouri Baptist University. SCCC

752 Desktop Publishing - Grades 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course is used as an introduction to layout and design using technology. Students use Adobe PageMaker software to create brochures, newsletters, ads and other business forms. Prerequisite: Computer Applications.

753 Technology Communications - Grades 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course focuses on all aspects of communication: written, oral, visual, and presentation. Students will create several multimedia presentations using the following: advanced desktop publishing skills, PowerPoint presentation software, webpage design, the Microsoft Office XP integrated package, and the World Wide Web. Prerequisite: Computer Applications.

755 Computer Applications - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 (0.5 credit)
This course reinforces proper technique of alphabetic and numeric keyboarding. Formal business document formatting is taught using MS Word. Students will also learn to create and manage Excel spreadsheets, Access databases and PowerPoint presentations. Integration of the Office XP components is also included. Required for graduation.
