WORLD LANGUAGES COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
365 Spanish 1 – Grade 9, 10, 11 (1 credit)
In this course students receive an introduction to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. The variety of materials and teaching methods used in class will make possible the development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition to learning to read, write and converse in elementary Spanish, students will gain information about the influences and geography of Spanish-speaking countries and about the culture and daily life of people living in them. Prerequisite: 50th percentile or higher in English, Reading and Math on the ITBS or other standardized test and C’s or better in 8th grade English, Reading and Math.
367 Spanish 2 - Grades 10, 11, 12 (1 credit)
This course continues building on the foundation established in Spanish 1 with emphasis on vocabulary and grammar. Students will continue to develop reading and listening comprehension skills, as well as writing and speaking abilities in Spanish. Students will also further develop their understanding of the cultures of the Spanish speaking world. Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 1.
368 Honors Spanish 2 - Grades 10, 11, 12 (0.5 weight) (1 credit)
This course continues building on the foundation established in Spanish 1 with emphasis on vocabulary and grammar. Students will continue to develop reading and listening comprehension skills as well as writing and speaking abilities in Spanish, with an additional emphasis on preparation for Honors Spanish 3. Students are further challenged with activities and lessons designed to expand their knowledge of the cultures and people of the Spanish-speaking world and compare them to their own. Prerequisites: 90th percentile in English and Reading on the PLAN and B in 365.
369 *Honors Spanish 3 - Grades 11, 12 (1.0 weight) (1 credit)
Material covered is the equivalent of a first year college course in Spanish composition and conversation. Students achieve greater fluency through meaningful communicative activities, creative compositions and cultural readings. In addition, the grammatical structure of the language is studied more intensely. Spanish 3 students may earn five hours of college credit through UMSL for a tuition fee paid to the University. Prerequisites: A/B in 368.
370 *Honors Spanish 4 - Grade 12 (1.0 weight) (1 credit)
Material covered is the equivalent of a second year college course in Spanish composition and conversation. Though some grammar review is included, this course focuses primarily on the use of Spanish in practical situations. Meaningful communicative activities strengthen speaking skills, while creative compositions and projects improve writing ability. In addition, students will have the opportunity to study the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Those enrolled in Spanish 4 may earn five hours of college credit through UMSL for a tuition fee paid to the University. Prerequisite: A/B in 369.
375 French 1 - Grades 9, 10, 11 (1 credit)
In this course students acquire the foundation of fluency in the French language. Through integrated technology (internet, DVD, CD) students develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in contexts that are meaningful for basic communication. Global awareness is enhanced through the study of the geography, customs and cultures of French speaking countries in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia and the South Pacific. Prerequisites: 50th percentile or higher in English, Reading and Math on the ITBS or other standardized test and C’s or better in 8th grade English, Reading and Math.
377 French 2 - Grades 10, 11, 12 (1 credit)
This course builds on the foundation of French 1 with emphasis on increased understanding of grammatical structures, expanded vocabulary, reading facility, listening comprehension and speaking proficiency. Through the use of interesting and culturally relevant videoclips and website activities, students gain enhanced awareness of geography and current events in the French-speaking countries located in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia and the South Pacific. Prerequisite: completion of 375.
378 Honors French 2 - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 (0.5 weight) (1 credit)
This course builds on the foundation of French 1 with emphasis on increased understanding of grammatical structures, expanded vocabulary, reading facility, listening comprehension and speaking proficiency. Through the use of the program’s culturally relevant videoclips, students gain enhanced awareness of geography and current events in the French-speaking countries located in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia and the South Pacific. Unit projects that incorporate more extensive internet and technology activities serve to further develop fluency in communication. 90th percentile in English and Reading on the PLAN and A/B in 375.
379 *Honors French 3 - Grades 10, 11, 12 (1.0 weight) (1 credit)
This course is the equivalent of a first semester college course in French composition and conversation and is offered for 5 college credits through the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Students refine their speaking and writing skills through a multi-media based study of history, literature, theater, music and art in the French-speaking countries located in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia and the South Pacific. Supplementary internet and PowerPoint projects follow each of the ten units and are designed to increase vocabulary, stimulate fluency and promote multicultural global awareness. Prerequisites: A/B in 378.
380 *Honors French 4 – Grade 11, 12 (1.0 weight) (1 credit)
This course is the equivalent of a second semester college course in French composition and conversation and is offered for 5 college credits through the University of Missouri-St. Louis. It further strengthens French 3 language skills and cultural competency through a video-integrated approach. Provocative short films by contemporary francophone filmmakers coordinate with textbook and website exercises to enrich the study of history, literature, theater, music and art in French speaking countries located in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia and the South Pacific. Literary selections are chosen to develop appreciation for the diversity of the francophone world. Students interested in taking the College Board AP French test in May will be offered additional preparatory assignments. Prerequisites: A/B in 379.
